Today more than ever, we need people to live authentically, to find their voice, and then speak loudly and clearly, to stand up for what is true and not be cowed by fear. We need people with courage.
Henry Emmons : The Chemistry of Joy
courage begins with a stick figure!
Think you're not an artist because you "just draw stick figures?" We're here to change that! If you've ever said "I'm not really an artist..." then The heART Center is the place for you! This is where creativity builds courage - because art is about a story, not a skill and the process is more important than the product.
courageous heARTS is an arts-based organization designed in partnership with and for young people. Our mission is to co-create experiences with young people by offering them a safe space, built with the intention to heal and empower—through expressive arts, community building, and leadership development.
Healing heart wounds and nourishing the creative spirit are central to our work. In doing so, we seek to strengthen and empower young people’s inner and outer voices so they thrive as courageous change-makers in their communities. We activate this vision through:
Youth Advisory Board: Leadership team of 8-10 youth ages 14-18 who serve as co-creators of the organization with the Board of Directors.
The heART Center: Our free, drop-in studio space where youth ages 10-18 participate in expressive arts opportunities during out-of-school time.
RestART: A school engagement program fusing restorative practices with expressive arts to empower students as educational change agents.
heARTS’ strives to engage all young people in the arts—especially reluctant or marginalized artists. Art-making, in all forms, is a powerful tool for the exploration and development of a healthy identity and a valuable avenue for self-expression. We believe all people are born with vibrant creative spirits that need nurturing and support in spaces free from judgement and critique.
heARTS' unique approach to community and youth development appears much like an iceberg, with expressive arts easily visible above the surface. What’s embedded beneath the surface—our youth-driven, trauma-informed and restorative approaches—provide the critical foundation for lasting impact for both individuals and our community.
